What Factors Affect the Price of Sandblasting?

There are a lot of variables when it comes to sandblasting! All of these variables may affect your final cost.

Area of the Vehicle to be Sandblasted

The area of the vehicle that needs to be sandblasted will affect the price of the process. Obviously, a small vehicle or a vehicle that only needs one area sandblasted will cost less.

Condition of the Vehicle

Rust removal will require more time and materials from your technician. Expect the price to reflect their expenses and time.

Coating on the Vehicle

Some coatings, such as plastic or powder coat, are especially durable. These coatings will take extra time and materials to remove from the vehicle.

Intensity of the Sandblasting

Some jobs just require extra muscle! Some technicians may charge extra for more intense sandblasting jobs.

Material Used for Sandblasting

There are a variety of media types for a variety of sandblasting jobs. The different types of materials come with different price tags. Talk to your technician to get a recommendation for the right type of material for your job.

What am I Paying for?

Cost for Labor

Typically, a sandblasting company will charge between $40-$65 per hour for labor. Specialty services may cost around $75 per hour for labor. On average, a car takes about two to three hours to sandblast, so you can expect to pay anywhere from $80-$225 for labor.

Cost of Materials

The material used to sandblast a car is usually either plastic media or glass beads. You are also paying for the space and equipment needed to sandblast your vehicle.

Plastic Media Blasting

Plastic media is the budget option for media blasting your vehicle. The raw material costs about $1 per pound. Plastic media is available in a variety of grits. It is non-toxic and will not leave any residue on your vehicle.

Glass Bead Blasting

Glass bead blasting is the other option available to car owners. The glass beads cost between $1.50-$2.50 per pound. Glass beads are ideal for vehicle blasting because of their round shape. This method usually leaves the surface with a smooth finish. Glass bead blasting is also environmentally safe.

Preparation Work on the Vehicle

The sandblasting company will usually prep the vehicle for sandblasting. This may include stripping the vehicle, removing parts, removing grease, cleaning the vehicle, and rust repair.

Final Thoughts

Sandblasting is a quick way to get rid of stubborn rust and paint! If you are looking to completely strip your vehicle, find a trustworthy sandblasting business and get a quote.

  1. Several things in this article are inaccurate or wrong. For example It takes way longer than 2-3 hours to sandblast an entire car. 6 hours on average. And sandblasters charge $150/hr. Thats where your average $900 comes from. Glass beads do not leave a smooth finish and you don’t want a smooth finish either so why pay over 3x more than necessary for material? You want whats called an anchor pattern. I do sandblasting for a living.
