Whether you mistrust the oil used by oil change chains, or you just want to save a few dollars, buying and bringing your own oil to an oil change seems like a good option. Most mechanics and oil change places will allow you to bring your own oil, and your own oil filter. Call ahead to check their policies.

In the end, it is your car and your engine, so you should be free to bring whatever oil you like to your appointment.

Jiffy Lube, Walmart, and many other chain oil change establishments will allow customers to bring their own oil and oil filters. This may save money, as it is less expensive to buy your own oil, and just pay the service charge fee for the oil change. Every business has their own policies, so it is best to check with the mechanic.

Can You Bring Your Own Oil to Jiffy Lube?

The answer is yes! You can bring your own oil to Jiffy Lube, according to representatives at Jiffy Lube locations in Florida, Texas, New York, and California.

The regular price for an oil change at Jiffy Lube is $30-$70, depending on the vehicle and the type of oil used. According to sources at Jiffy Lube, if you bring your own oil, they will only charge the service fee, instead of charging you for oil and service.

Can You Bring Your Own Oil to Walmart?

Walmart also allows you to bring your own engine oil to their oil change service areas. Depending on the store, they may still charge you the full oil change price, just charge the service fee, or, even change the oil for free!

Walmart offers one of the cheapest oil changes around, starting at just $19.88. A full synthetic oil change costs $39.88.

Why Would You Want to Bring Your Own Oil?

So, what’s the point of buying and bringing your own oil to a mechanic, anyway?

Save Money

Oil change chains mark up the oil they offer. By purchasing your own oil, you can save at least $10 per oil change, if not much more, if you go with a full synthetic oil. The mechanic should only charge you for service if you provide the oil.

Oil Preference

If you prefer a particular brand or a specialty oil, it may be simpler (and less expensive) to purchase the oil yourself, then bring it to the shop for an oil change. This will allow you a lot more options for both the oil and the location of the oil change.

Final Thoughts

Most oil change chains and mechanics will allow you to bring your own engine oil and filter. It is your vehicle, so you have a choice when it comes to what goes into it. Call ahead just to make sure the shop knows you will bring your own oil, and the mechanic on duty is comfortable with that option.

  1. Also many OEM brand oil filters have valves that won’t let dirty oil drain back into engine. And their cleaning elements are better. Same with oil. The OEM brand oils are tested by the manufacturer before automotive manufacturer put their name on it.

In 10 years we won’t need to worry about motor oil/filter, brakes and emissions anymore because of Hybrid and EV automobiles.

  2. I bmo for ONE reason. I have zero trust in any business that can make much $$$ by charging for quality and replacing it with the dirt cheapest they can buy. ONE quart of low quality engine oil can permanently clog oil passages in your engine !
